EXPERIMENT THREE: THE BRIDGE

DUE: EXTENSION for ALL students ... Monday 30th of June, by 11:59pm.

ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING: 35% (marking schedule)

EXPERIMENT 3: THE BRIDGE

TIMETABLE: 5 Weeks, 35% of final grade.
ARCHITECTURAL ISSUE: The Architecture of Theory and Practice.
ARCHITECTURAL CONVENTION: The Moving Element.
ARCHITECTURAL CHALLENGE: Articulating the relationship between Theory and Practice in the students chosen field. A school of Architecture/Architectural Computing/Engineering.
CLIENTS: Each student.
SOFTWARE: SketchUp, Lumion, Fraps, Blogger.
TECHNIQUES: The perspective, interactive elements.
ASSESSABLE OUTPUTS: 1 MashUp of 3 news articles, 18 sketch perspective drawings, 36 custom textures, 1 SketchUp model that includes the two moving elements and an architectural Folly, 1 Lumion environment, 5 real time image captures on a Blogger weblog.
PREMISE: Environments change over time. Action and interaction within an environment provide a vehicle to synthesize information and make sense of continually shifting structures.

PROCEDURE

Imagine you are the Dean of a school of Architecture, Architectural Computing or Engineering. Your school has 100 students who are drawn from all around the world and are supported by scholarships. Your challenge is to design a school that forms a bridge spanning a valley. The valley should be inspired by a landscape from your country of origin (so while it is custom designed by each student the valley has a strong connection to a real place in the world). In addition, you will design an architectural folly on the valley floor where you will host a monthly "Deans Lunch" to discuss theories of Architecture, Architectural Computing or Engineering with your students. Finally, design two moving elements that modify the students view of the school and architectural folly, when they see them from either location, in such a way that reinforces or challenges your particular "Theory".

Architectural Folly on the Valley Floor

FORM REQUIREMENTS
line

Two Moving Elements: these move in relation to the main architectural form to modify views from the Architecture to its surroundings, especially to the Architectural Folly.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

In addition to the overall course assessment criteria students will be assessed on the level and extent to which they engage with the criteria listed below:

THE MASHUP OF THREE NEWS ARTICLES _ Does the MashUp of the the three news articles suggest a distinctive and significant Theory?
THE 18 SKETCH PERSPECTIVES _ Do the 18 sketch perspectives communicate a distinctive and significant approach the student has taken with respect to an architectural Folly?
THE 36 CUSTOM TEXTURES _ Do the 36 custom textures demonstrate inquiry and experimentation with respect to ideas of movement?
THE MOVING ELEMENTS AND FOLLY_ Do the moving elements and Folly demonstrate a distinctive, significant and formally evocative approach to the students Theory?
THE IMAGE CAPTURES AND ARCHITECTURE _ Do the image captures demonstrate that the student has thought about the relative size of each element, what their proportions are, their orientation, what paths they take, how texture and color map over their surfaces and how all of the above work together to establish the balance or otherwise of their scheme?
